Why Spades Institute

The best national security solutions don't start with an RFP. They start with a conversation between people who trust each other.

Our Story

The Problem

Securing our nation requires a unified front, yet the path to innovation is often obstructed by diverging priorities. While government, industry, and academia share a primary macro-interest in a resilient national security apparatus, their operations are frequently tugged by competing economic and political micro-interests. This misalignment prevents us from leveraging collective expertise, leaving our defense frameworks vulnerable to critical gaps.

What We Do Differently

Spades Institute bridges the gap between sectors by fostering trusted, nonpartisan communication. We move beyond the transactional nature of the defense and national security industry to host candid conversations where big challenges are solved without the constraints of contracts or political posturing. Our value lies in creating the space where collective expertise can flow freely toward practical, measurable outcomes.

What Success Looks Like

Success is when competing micro-interests align toward our shared macro-goal: a more resilient national defense. It's when industry innovation reaches operators faster because the right conversations happened before the RFP. When policy makers access ground truth from practitioners without navigating bureaucratic channels. When breakthroughs emerge from candid dialogue rather than contract negotiations. Our impact shows up in shortened timelines, smarter resource allocation, and solutions that wouldn't exist in a purely transactional environment.

Who We Are

Spades Institute was founded by veterans and national security practitioners who got tired of watching good ideas die in procurement. We've sat on both sides of the table - in the Pentagon and in industry - and we know the real problem isn't capability gaps. It's that the right people don't talk until it's too late. We built this organization to fix that.

How We Connect Sectors

From challenge to solution in four focused steps.

1

Identify the Gap

Find challenges where bureaucracy, contract vehicles, or political optics prevent honest problem-solving.

2

Assemble Without Agenda

Bring together operators, technologists, and decision-makers before anyone writes a scope of work.

3

Clear the Constraints

No RFPs. No posturing. No sales pitches. Just the people who know the problem and the people who can solve it.

4

Deliver What Works

Solutions, partnerships, or clarity that moves faster than procurement ever could.

Example Scenario

Challenge

A combatant command needs to adopt commercial AI tools, but acquisition timelines are measured in years. Industry has solutions but can't navigate the requirements process.

Outcome

We convened the operators, the program office, and three tech companies in one room. No contracts on the table. Six months later, the capability was deployed - because the right conversation happened before the paperwork started.
